Why do drains in Moonee Ponds block so often?
Two local factors compound each other. First, much of the suburb’s original drainage is earthenware clay pipe with a joint roughly every metre. Second, Moonee Ponds sits on reactive clay soil that swells in wet weather and shrinks in dry, which gradually works those joints open. Open joints leak moisture, tree roots follow the moisture in, and the resulting root mass catches everything flowing past. It is a very common pattern across Melbourne’s interwar suburbs.
